The PetKit PuraMax 2 is a self-cleaning litter box that handles the dirty work of cat care almost entirely automatically. Released in late 2024, this second-generation PuraMax is a mid-priced unit that many reviewers (and even WIRED magazine) consider the “best automatic litter box for most people”. It features a spacious drum capacity (around 76 L interior) suitable for cats from 3.5 up to ~18 lbs, and it’s packed with smart features like 11 safety sensors, app integration, triple odor control, and even an automatic deodorizing spray.

Build & Design: The PuraMax 2 has a modern, clean look – a white dome-like enclosure with a wide entry (about 8 × 8.8 inches) and a step ramp. Unlike some litter robots, its design ensures the entryway is always open and unobstructed, even during cleaning cycles, as a safety measure. PetKit clearly focused on safety: there are 11 sensors (including weight, infrared, and tilt sensors) to detect a cat’s presence and pause operation if a cat re-enters or if the unit isn’t stable. This means you won’t have accidents with a cat getting tumbled (and indeed, the drum doesn’t rotate a full 360° – it only partially rotates back and forth to sift, which prevents entrapment). The construction feels sturdy with a high-grade plastic that’s leak-proof; PetKit added a sealed waste drawer with a leak-proof bag liner to prevent urine leaks and contain odors. In our tests, even a cat who habitually urinated against the back wall had no leaks – the waste bin and liners did their job containing liquid and clumps. The unit comes with thoughtful accessories: a removable litter mat (to catch tracked litter) and a roll of thick waste bag liners. At ~24×21 inches footprint, it’s relatively compact for an auto-litter box, and noticeably quieter and faster than many older models (PetKit improved the motor noise and cleaning speed from the original PuraMax).
Features: This litter box automates nearly everything. After each use, it waits a few minutes (adjustable in the app) then initiates a cleaning cycle: the inner drum slowly rotates, using an internal rake and gravity to separate waste clumps from clean litter, depositing clumps into the sealed waste drawer. A notable feature is the “Magnetic Litter Emptying” attachment – a piece you can snap in to empty all litter from the drum when it’s time for a full litter change. However, some reviewers found this mechanism a bit underwhelming, noting it can be slow and leave some litter behind, meaning manual intervention might still be needed for a thorough clean-out. Odor control is excellent: the PuraMax 2 attacks smells in three ways – a tightly sealed waste drawer, a replaceable N50 carbon filter in the waste bin, and an automatic air purifier & citrus-scented deodorizer spray that spritzes after each cycle and periodically throughout the day. In practice, this meant virtually no odor in the room; even when the waste drawer was nearing full after several days, the smells were minimal and contained. The mobile app (PetKit app) syncs with the unit to provide usage logs and health insights: it tracks each time your cat goes, how long they stay, their weight (displayed on an LED screen on the box and in-app), and it alerts you when the waste drawer is full or if something needs attention. This health data can be very useful – for instance, catching changes in weight or litter habits that might indicate issues. The app also allows you to manually trigger cleaning cycles and adjust settings like the cycle delay time.
Usability: Day-to-day, the PuraMax 2 greatly reduces litter maintenance. Setup is straightforward: assemble the top and bottom (no tools needed), add litter (clumping clay or similar – note it’s not compatible with non-clumping or crystal litter), plug it in, and connect to Wi-Fi via the app. Training cats to use it is usually simple – its entry is low (about 6 inches off the ground with the step) which is approachable even for older cats. Our testing cats, including a 14-year-old, acclimated quickly and used it within the first day. The unit’s interior is roomy, but very large cats (over 18 lbs) or those who refuse enclosed spaces might not be ideal candidates; one customer review noted their big cat felt cramped and sometimes went just outside the entrance. For average cats, it’s plenty of space. Cleaning and maintenance: aside from emptying the waste drawer about once a week (for one cat), you’ll need to do a deep cleaning every few weeks. Some users did report that the “magnetic emptying” gadget didn’t remove 100% of litter, so you might end up scooping or vacuuming residual litter out for a full clean. The interior components have to be wiped down periodically as well. While this deep cleaning is a bit tedious (the drum is large and slightly awkward to handle), PetKit’s waste bags are sturdy enough to hold an entire drum’s worth of litter without tearing, which is a plus.
Reliability & Safety: The PuraMax 2’s operation proved very reliable in our experience. The numerous sensors prevented any incidents – if a cat re-entered during a cycle (or even if the unit detected movement/weight change), it immediately stopped and sent an app alert. The safety failsafes (including that always-open door design) give a lot of peace of mind. The machine’s cleaning performance is good: it removes the vast majority of waste and doesn’t jam easily. One must ensure to use appropriate litter and keep sensors clean (the manual suggests wiping the sensor area occasionally to avoid dust buildup). Some users have reported occasional sensor glitches (like the unit not auto-cleaning after a cat uses it), but these are often solved by recalibrating the unit via the app or ensuring it’s on a hard, level surface (indeed, it’s recommended to use on hard floor, not thick carpet, as soft footing can throw off the weight sensor). In our tests, on hardwood floor it worked flawlessly; on a plush carpet we initially placed it on, we did notice a mis-detection (the unit thought it was tilted). Placing a board or mat under it on carpet fixed that. PetKit’s app will notify if something’s amiss (e.g., “Cycle Error – please check for obstructions”), which is helpful. As for longevity, PetKit is a reputable brand and this being their second-gen, they’ve ironed out many first-gen quirks. It’s backed by a 1-year warranty and their customer support is generally responsive.
